Accessibility

What we are aiming for, what we have actually tested, and what we know is not right yet.

Conformance target

This site aims to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA. That target covers the newer criteria on focus appearance, focus obstruction, target size and redundant entry, not only the 2.1 set.

What is built in

  • Semantic HTML with landmarks, one h1 per page, and no skipped heading levels.
  • A skip link as the first focusable element.
  • A visible focus indicator on every interactive element, meeting contrast requirements in both themes.
  • Full keyboard operability, including the navigation menu, accordions and the theme control. Escape closes open menus.
  • Interactive targets of at least 44 by 44 pixels in most cases, and never below 24 by 24.
  • Form fields with real labels, hints associated by aria-describedby, inline errors, and an error summary announced politely.
  • Text that reflows at 320 pixels wide with no horizontal page scrolling; wide tables scroll inside their own focusable container.
  • Motion reduced to almost nothing when prefers-reduced-motion is set.
  • Diagrams carrying a title and a full text description, with the same information restated in the surrounding prose.
  • Colour never used as the only means of conveying information.

What has been tested

Automated checks against WCAG 2.2 and a keyboard-only walkthrough of the main journeys. A full screen-reader assessment and an independent audit have not yet been carried out, when they are, this page will record the date and the findings.

Known limitations

  • Diagrams are complex images. Each has a text description, but a reader relying entirely on that description receives a summary rather than the full spatial relationships.
  • Some technical content is unavoidably dense. We have not produced plain-language alternatives for research reports.
